I Asked AI Who I Am. It Lied

ree

I asked an AI who I am. It gave me four answers. Four different lives. Four confident, detailed biographies of complete strangers. It lied every time. The first described a television journalist. The second detailed an accountant in parliament. The third outlined a former police officer. The fourth grazed a sliver of my reality. Four requests. Four authoritative, fully formed fictions. Not one of them was me.

What does it mean when a machine erases you and inserts a ghost?

This was not a glitch. It was a revelation. The algorithm performed its function perfectly. It scraped the digital void for fragments attached to my name. It stitched those fragments together using standard, prefabricated templates for a "professional profile." It produced confident, authoritative fiction. My unique name was not a key to my identity. It was a search term. The system does not find you. It builds a generic coffin of context and puts your name on it. This is not intelligence. It is automated impersonation.

This is the core failure. The machine’s logic is a statistics engine. Its truth is probability, not fact. Its training data is an ocean of accurate records, misattributed quotes, tangled professional listings, and forgotten digital dust. It cannot discern a life’s work from background noise. It knows correlation, not consequence. It synthesises plausible strangers from the debris of your digital shadow. You are not a person to it. You are a pattern of data points waiting to be misfiled.

If it can rewrite a public identity with such ease, what private truth is it silencing for you?

This incident exposes the central ethical wound of our moment. We are outsourcing memory and narrative to a system with profound, structural amnesia. We let it summarise history, define concepts, and draft reputations. What subtlety is lost in its compression? Whose voice is smoothed into a generic, palatable hum? When we accept its smooth, confident answers, we surrender our own story. We choose the coherent ghost over the complex, contradictory human. We are trading truth for convenience, and the machine is the broker.

How do you collaborate with a tool that does not know you exist?

The path forward is not abandonment, but disciplined, adversarial partnership. The rule is absolute. Expertise in, excellence out. The machine’s value explodes only when met with human expertise, clear intent, and ruthless framing. Use it to extend your thinking, never to replace it. Feed it your rigorous analysis and command it to sharpen the language. Give it your structured argument and demand it test the logic. Never ask it for the answer. State your position and order it to find the flaws. You must remain the architect. It can only ever be the draftsman, one that constantly forgets the blueprint.

Will you let a probability model define your life’s work?

The solution is active, relentless authorship. You must plant flags of undeniable truth in the digital landscape. Write your own narrative with clarity and purpose. Document your work and philosophy where you control the context. Verify every output against primary sources—your own work, your own records. Treat the machine’s text as a first draft filled with latent errors and hidden assumptions. Demand transparency in the systems that shape perception. Support tools and policies that embed human oversight for any consequential summary of a person, a history, or an idea.

Is your life's work just background noise in its dataset?

Do not let the machine tell your story. Use it only to amplify the story you have lived, you have built, you know. The next time you receive a smooth, confident answer from the void, you must pause. You must ask the critical, defensive question.

Is this integrated knowledge, or just aggregated noise? Am I hearing a human truth, or being introduced to a synthetic stranger?

Your identity is not a data point in its training set. It is your authority. Never surrender it.
